I love working with teachers, librarians, and anyone who works with children. The following workshops can all be expanded, depending on circumstances, to a fuller suite of consulting services in conjunction with the workshop’s theme.
Critical Visual Literacy
My cornerstone workshop. Introduces and problematizes the concept of a white, male default in abstract images (the subject of my dissertation).
Who it’s for: Teachers; librarians; anyone who reads or watches any type of visual media with/for children.
Format: Interactive presentation and workshop. Zoom or in-person.
Young Children, Picture Books, and Race
A systematic literature review of scholarship at the intersection of young children, picture books, race, and racism. Includes best practice recommendations for educators.
Who it’s for: Classroom and literacy teachers; librarians; anyone who reads picture books to/with children.
Format: Interactive presentation and workshop. Zoom or in-person.
“I Don’t Even Need To Be Here!”
A teacher reflects on changes in her classroom after adjusting a “boxed” reading set to feature a carefully selected, social-justice-oriented classroom library.
Who it’s for: Classroom and literacy teachers; librarians; anyone who reads picture books to/with children.
Format: Interactive presentation and workshop. Zoom or in-person.
Works especially when preceded by Young Children, Picture Books, and Race above.
Loudness in the Library
Summarizes and offers insights from a curriculum I co-authored, which empowers students to think critically about identity and bias.
Who it’s for: Classroom, Language Arts teachers, and librarians; optimal for those working with Middle and High Schoolers.
Format: Interactive presentation and workshop. Zoom or in-person.
